Overview

Ursa Minor is a small constellation that hosts Polaris, the current North Star. Its shape resembles a smaller version of the Big Dipper, earning it the nickname "Little Dipper." The seven stars form a ladle shape, with Polaris at the tip of the handle, lying almost exactly on Earth's rotational axis.

Polaris (α UMi) is an F7 supergiant at magnitude 1.98, located approximately 430 light-years from Earth. Though Ursa Minor ranks only 56th in area among the 88 constellations, it has been invaluable throughout history as a navigational and directional reference, visible year-round in the Northern Hemisphere without ever setting below the horizon.

How to Find It

Use the two "pointer stars" at the outer edge of the Big Dipper's bowl — Merak and Dubhe — and extend a line about five times their separation to land on Polaris. From Polaris, a small arc of fainter stars curves back toward a bowl shape, forming the rest of Ursa Minor's Little Dipper.

As a circumpolar constellation, Ursa Minor never sets in the Northern Hemisphere and can be observed on any clear night throughout the year. Polaris itself is bright enough to spot even from moderately light-polluted skies.

Mythology and Culture

In Greek mythology, Zeus placed Arcas — the son of the nymph Callisto — in the sky as a bear cub, paired with his mother Ursa Major (Callisto herself, transformed into a bear by Hera's jealousy). The two constellations circle the celestial pole together for eternity.

This myth of love, jealousy, and a mother-and-son reunion among the stars has been retold across cultures since antiquity.

Star Trivia

Polaris (α UMi) — About 430 light-years away, magnitude 1.98. An F7 supergiant and actually a triple star system. It is also a Cepheid variable with a period of roughly 4 days. Due to Earth's axial precession over a ~26,000-year cycle, Polaris will gradually drift away from the celestial pole, but today it sits closer to true north than any other bright star.

Kochab (β UMi) — About 131 light-years away, magnitude 2.08. An orange K4 giant. Around 3,000 years ago, the precession of Earth's axis brought Kochab close enough to the north pole that it served as the North Star for ancient civilizations, including Egypt.

Pherkad (γ UMi) — About 487 light-years away, magnitude 3.05. A blue-white A3 giant. Together, Kochab and Pherkad are known as "the Guardians of the Pole" or Al-Farqadain ("the two calves") in Arabic tradition, marking the outer bowl of the Little Dipper.
