ペルセウス座は秋から冬にかけて北天に現れる英雄の星座です。最も明るい星ミルファク（α星、1.79等）はF型超巨星で、ペルセウス座α星団の中心に位置しています。
最も有名な星はアルゴル（β星、「悪魔の星」）で、約2日21時間の周期で2.1等から3.4等まで明るさが変化する食変光星です。この規則的な減光は、暗い伴星がアルゴルの前を横切ることで起こります。ペルセウス座流星群（8月中旬）の放射点としても知られています。
天の川の中に位置するため、二重星団（hとχ）をはじめ数多くの星団が散在する観測対象が豊富な星域です。ギリシャ神話の英雄の名を冠する星座の中でも、アンドロメダ座、カシオペヤ座、ケフェウス座、くじら座と関連星座が最も多い「物語の中心人物」です。
秋〜冬の夜（10月〜2月）、カシオペヤ座のW字から天の川に沿って南へ目を移すと、ペルセウス座の星々が見つかります。南中時刻は12月中旬で午後9時頃。ミルファクを中心とした明るい星の集まりが目印です。
カシオペヤ座とおうし座のプレアデス星団の中間に位置しているため、この2つの有名な目印を基準にすると探しやすいでしょう。ミルファクの周囲には肉眼でもわかる星の集団（α星団）が広がっており、双眼鏡で見ると壮観です。アルゴルはミルファクの南西方向にあります。
ギリシャ神話の英雄ペルセウスは、ゼウスとアルゴスの王女ダナエの子です。祖父アクリシオスが「孫に殺される」という神託を恐れてダナエを幽閉しましたが、ゼウスが黄金の雨となって訪れ、ペルセウスが生まれました。母子は箱に入れられて海に流されましたが、セリフォス島に漂着して成長しました。
成人したペルセウスは、島の王ポリュデクテスに命じられてメドゥーサ退治に向かいます。アテナの鏡の盾、ヘルメスの翼のあるサンダル、ハデスの透明マントを神々から授かり、メドゥーサの目を直視せず鏡越しに首を刎ねることに成功しました。切り口からはペガススとクリュサオルが生まれました。
帰路、エチオピアの海岸で岩に繋がれたアンドロメダ姫を発見。海の怪物ケートス（くじら座）からメドゥーサの首を使って救い出し、二人は結婚しました。ペルセウス、アンドロメダ、カシオペヤ、ケフェウス、くじら座が空に並ぶ配置は、この壮大な物語を天空に描いた一大パノラマです。
アルゴル（β Per） — 地球から約90光年。「悪魔の星」の異名を持つ食変光星の代表格で、明るさが約10時間かけて1.3等分暗くなり、元に戻ります。2.87日の規則的な周期はアラブの天文学者には古くから知られていましたが、近代的な観測で食連星であることが判明したのは1783年（ジョン・グッドリック）。実は三重連星系で、主星は質量移動を経験した「パラドックス星」でもあります。
ミルファク（α Per） — 地球から約510光年。等級1.79のF5型超巨星で、太陽の約5,000倍の光度を持ちます。若い散開星団（ペルセウス座α星団、メロット20）の中心にあり、双眼鏡で見ると周囲に数十個の青白い若い星が群れています。
二重星団（hとχ Per） — 地球から約7,500光年。2つの散開星団が隣り合う珍しい天体で、それぞれ数百個の星を含みます。肉眼でぼんやりとした2つの光斑として見え、双眼鏡や低倍率望遠鏡で最も美しいとされる天体のひとつです。年齢は約1,300万年と非常に若い星団です。
ペルセウス座流星群 — 毎年8月12〜13日頃にピークを迎える三大流星群のひとつ。夏休みの時期で観測しやすく、1時間に最大100個以上の流星を見せます。母彗星はスイフト・タットル彗星（周期133年）です。
ペルセウス座はゲーム内で15番目に登場する5ステージ構成の星座。ミルファクから始まり、ミラム、アルゴル、アルドゥ、ζ星の順に進行します。
主役ギミックは 板隕石 + Nebula。横長の板隕石が減速雲の中をゆっくり通過してくる場面では、Gravity Well のスペースが極端に狭くなります。
雲に入る前に板の位置を把握し、雲の外側で迂回するか、雲の中で板の長辺方向に Slingshot で抜けるかを判断しましょう。5 ステージあるので、序盤の易しい配置で Shard を温存するのが安定攻略の鍵です。
Perseus appears in the northern sky from autumn through winter. Its brightest star Mirfak (alpha, mag 1.79) is an F-type supergiant at the heart of the Alpha Persei Cluster.
The most famous star is Algol (beta, "the Demon Star"), an eclipsing binary that varies from magnitude 2.1 to 3.4 over a period of about 2 days 21 hours. The dimming occurs when a fainter companion crosses in front. Perseus is also the radiant of the Perseid meteor shower in mid-August.
Situated within the Milky Way, Perseus is rich in clusters — most notably the Double Cluster (h and χ). Among mythological hero constellations, Perseus sits at the center of the largest connected story, with Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, and Cetus all nearby.
On autumn and winter evenings (October through February), follow the Milky Way south from Cassiopeia's W to find Perseus. It transits around 9 PM in mid-December. The bright cluster around Mirfak serves as a signpost.
Perseus lies midway between Cassiopeia and the Pleiades in Taurus — two prominent landmarks that bracket it nicely. The Alpha Persei Cluster around Mirfak is visible to the naked eye and spectacular through binoculars. Algol sits southwest of Mirfak.
Perseus is the son of Zeus and Princess Danae of Argos. Her father King Acrisius, warned by oracle that his grandson would kill him, imprisoned Danae — but Zeus visited her as golden rain. Mother and infant were cast into the sea in a chest and washed ashore on Seriphos.
As an adult, Perseus was sent to slay Medusa by King Polydectes. Armed with Athena's mirrored shield, Hermes' winged sandals, and Hades' helm of invisibility, he beheaded the Gorgon without meeting her petrifying gaze. From the wound sprang Pegasus and Chrysaor.
On his return, Perseus spotted Princess Andromeda chained to a rock on the Ethiopian coast. Using Medusa's head, he turned the sea monster Cetus to stone and rescued her. The couple wed, and the entire cast — Perseus, Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, and Cetus — forms a grand mythological panorama across the autumn sky.
Algol (β Per) — About 90 light-years away. The prototype eclipsing binary and "Demon Star," dimming by 1.3 magnitudes over ~10 hours every 2.87 days. Arab astronomers noted its variability centuries ago; John Goodricke identified the eclipsing mechanism in 1783. It is actually a triple system whose primary experienced mass transfer — a so-called "Algol paradox" star.
Mirfak (α Per) — Roughly 510 light-years distant. An F5 supergiant at magnitude 1.79 with ~5,000× solar luminosity. It anchors the Alpha Persei Cluster (Melotte 20); binoculars reveal dozens of young blue-white stars surrounding it.
Double Cluster (h and χ Per) — About 7,500 light-years away. Two adjacent open clusters, each containing hundreds of stars. Faintly visible as two hazy patches to the naked eye, they are among the most beautiful sights through binoculars or a low-power telescope. Both are remarkably young at ~13 million years.
Perseid Meteor Shower — Peaks around August 12–13, one of the three major annual showers. With rates exceeding 100 meteors per hour during summer vacation, it is perhaps the most widely watched shower. Parent comet: 109P/Swift–Tuttle (period 133 years).
Perseus is the fifteenth constellation with 5 stages. Starting from Mirfak, stages progress through Miram, Algol, Aldu, and Zeta Persei.
The signature combo is Slab Meteor + Nebula. When a slab meteor drifts slowly through a slow-down cloud, available space for placing Gravity Wells shrinks dramatically.
Read the slab's position before entering the cloud — either route around the cloud entirely or Slingshot along the slab's long edge inside it. With 5 stages to clear, banking Shards on the easier early stages keeps the climax manageable.
