PEGASUS

Overview

Pegasus dominates the autumn sky with the Great Square, a vast quadrilateral formed by Markab, Scheat, Algenib, and Alpheratz (shared with Andromeda). At 7th in area, it is one of the largest constellations.

Enif (epsilon, mag 2.38) at the horse's muzzle is actually the brightest star. The interior of the Great Square is notably devoid of bright stars, making it a striking empty patch under dark skies.

In 1995, the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star (a "hot Jupiter") was discovered around 51 Pegasi, launching the era of exoplanet science. This discovery earned Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics.

How to Find It

On autumn evenings (September through December), look near the zenith for a large square of four stars. It transits around 9 PM in late October. In the relatively sparse autumn sky, this quadrilateral stands out clearly.

Each side of the Great Square spans about 15° (1.5 fist-widths at arm's length) — a substantial patch of sky. A chain of stars extending west traces the horse's neck to Enif at the muzzle. From the eastern (left) corner, stars trailing northeast enter Andromeda.

Mythology and Culture

In Greek mythology, Pegasus sprang from the blood of Medusa when Perseus severed her head — born through the power of Poseidon. A winged horse of divine grace, Pegasus could soar freely through the heavens.

The hero Bellerophon tamed Pegasus using a golden bridle given by Athena and rode him to slay the fire-breathing Chimera. But pride led Bellerophon to fly toward Olympus, whereupon Zeus sent a gadfly to sting Pegasus, throwing the rider to earth. Pegasus himself remained in heaven, tasked with carrying Zeus's thunderbolts.

Pegasus is also a symbol of artistic inspiration. He struck Mount Helicon with his hoof, creating the spring of Hippocrene — whoever drank from it was blessed with poetic genius. Today "Pegasus" evokes freedom of flight and creative imagination worldwide.

Star Trivia

Enif (ε Peg) — About 670 light-years away. A K-type supergiant at magnitude 2.38 with ~185 solar radii, located at the horse's muzzle. Actually brighter than any star in the Great Square itself. An irregular variable that occasionally flares dramatically.

Scheat (β Peg) — Roughly 196 light-years distant. A red giant and semi-regular variable fluctuating between magnitudes 2.4 and 2.8, forming the Great Square's northwest corner.

Markab (α Peg) — About 133 light-years away. A B9 giant at magnitude 2.49, anchoring the southwest corner. The name derives from Arabic for "the saddle of the horse."

51 Pegasi — A G-type star ~50 light-years away, similar to the Sun. In 1995, the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star was found here — "Dimidium," a hot Jupiter with a 4.2-day orbit. A milestone that revolutionized astronomy. At magnitude 5.5, it is barely visible to the naked eye.
