はくちょう座は北十字（ノーザンクロス）とも呼ばれ、天の川に沿って大きな十字架の形を描く夏から秋の星座です。尾にあたるデネブ（α星）は夏の大三角の一角を成す1等星で、白色超巨星として太陽の約20万倍の明るさを持つと推定されています。
くちばしの先にあるアルビレオ（β星）は、望遠鏡で見ると金色と青色の美しい二重星として観察でき、天体観測の入門対象として人気があります。
夏の夜、天頂付近で天の川を横切る大きな十字架を探してください。最も明るいデネブが十字の上端にあり、そこからくちばしのアルビレオまで翼を広げた白鳥の姿を見ることができます。
ギリシャ神話では、大神ゼウスが白鳥に姿を変えた姿とされています。また、冥界に落ちた友人を探して川を泳ぎ続けたパエトンの友人キュクノスが、白鳥に変身した姿という伝承もあります。

Cygnus, also known as the Northern Cross, traces a large cross along the Milky Way from summer through autumn. Deneb, at the tail, is a first-magnitude star forming one vertex of the Summer Triangle. As a white supergiant, Deneb is estimated to be roughly 200,000 times more luminous than the Sun.
At the beak, Albireo is a stunning double star — gold and blue through a telescope — making it a favorite target for beginner astronomers.
On summer evenings, look near the zenith for a large cross cutting across the Milky Way. Deneb sits at the top of the cross; from there, the swan stretches its wings down to Albireo at the beak.
In Greek mythology, Cygnus represents Zeus disguised as a swan. Another tradition tells of Cycnus, who was transformed into a swan while searching a river for his fallen friend Phaethon.
