DRACO

Overview

Draco is the 8th largest constellation and a circumpolar dragon winding between Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Its long body coils around the north celestial pole, making it visible year-round from the Northern Hemisphere. Eltanin (γ Dra) is the brightest star — unusually brighter than the alpha star Thuban.

Thuban (α Dra) is today a modest ~3.7 magnitude star, but due to Earth's axial precession it served as the North Star around 2700–2900 BC — the era of Egypt's pyramid construction. The ancient Egyptians oriented certain pyramid shafts toward Thuban as the celestial pole.

In mythology Draco represents Ladon, the sleepless dragon who guarded the golden apples in the garden of the Hesperides, slain by Heracles as one of his Twelve Labors. The neighboring constellation Hercules literally stands on the dragon's head.

How to Find It

Use the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) as your guide: trace a line from the dipper's bowl edge toward Polaris and look for a winding chain of stars between Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. That serpentine trail is Draco's body. The dragon's head is a compact trapezoid of four stars, with orange Eltanin as the brightest.

As a circumpolar constellation, Draco never sets from mid-northern latitudes. In spring and summer it rides high near the zenith at midnight; in autumn and winter it stays low in the northern sky. Its great length — one of the longest constellations in extent — makes it easiest to trace section by section.

Mythology and Culture

In Greek mythology, Draco is Ladon, the never-sleeping dragon coiled around the tree bearing the golden apples of the Hesperides. Heracles killed (or charmed to sleep) the dragon in his Eleventh Labor and brought back the apples. Hera honored the dragon by placing it among the stars.

An alternate tradition identifies the constellation with a giant cast into the sky by the goddess Athena during the Gigantomachy — the war between the Olympians and Giants.

In Babylonian astronomy the constellation was linked to Tiamat, the primordial chaos dragon. In ancient Egypt, Thuban's role as pole star gave Draco a sacred status aligned with cosmic order.

Eltanin (γ Dra) — About 154 light-years away. An orange K5 giant at magnitude 2.24. In 1728, astronomer James Bradley was observing Eltanin when he discovered stellar aberration — the first direct observational proof of Earth's orbit around the Sun.

Thuban (α Dra) — About 303 light-years away. A white A0 giant at magnitude 3.65. Though unremarkable today, precession of Earth's axis brought Thuban within 0.1° of the celestial pole around 2700 BC. Some passages in the Giza pyramids are believed to have been aligned with this ancient pole star.

Altais (δ Dra) — About 97 light-years away. A G9 yellow giant at magnitude 3.07. Its name derives from the Arabic Al Tais, meaning "the goat."

Aldhibah (η Dra) — About 88 light-years away. A G8 giant at magnitude 2.73. The closest of Draco's five stage stars to Earth, it glows with a warm yellow-orange color reminiscent of the Sun.
