しし座は春の夜空を代表する星座で、心臓部に青白く輝くレグルス（1.35等、B8 IVn型）を持ちます。「?マーク」を反転させたような形の「ししの鎌」（シックル）が頭部を描き、そこから三角形の体が続きます。
尾の先端にはデネボラ（β星、2.14等）があり、「春の大三角」の一角を形成しています。レグルスは黄道のすぐそばにあり、太陽や惑星がしばしば近くを通過します。
春の夜、南の空にレグルスを見つけ、そこから「?」を裏返したような鎌の形をたどってください。北斗七星の柄の方向から延長した線も、しし座の方向を指しています。
ギリシャ神話では、ヘラクレスが最初の功業で退治したネメアの獅子とされています。この獅子は通常の武器では傷つかない皮を持ち、ヘラクレスは素手で絞め殺したと伝えられています。

Leo is the signature constellation of the spring sky, with the blue-white Regulus (mag 1.35, B8 IVn) shining at its heart. The "Sickle" asterism — a reversed question mark — outlines the lion's head, followed by a triangular body.
Denebola (beta, mag 2.14) at the tail tip forms one vertex of the Spring Triangle. Regulus sits almost on the ecliptic, so the Sun and planets frequently pass nearby.
On spring evenings, find Regulus in the south and trace the reversed question-mark shape of the Sickle. The pointer stars of the Big Dipper's bowl, extended southward, also lead toward Leo.
In Greek mythology, Leo represents the Nemean Lion, slain by Heracles as the first of his twelve labors. The lion's hide was impervious to weapons, so Heracles defeated it with his bare hands.
