AQUARIUS

Overview

Aquarius is one of the twelve zodiac constellations and the 10th largest in the sky. It depicts Ganymede — the beautiful Trojan prince taken by Zeus to serve as cupbearer to the gods — pouring water from an urn. Its stars scatter across a wide area at 2nd to 3rd magnitude, making it a rewarding target for the naked eye.

Its two brightest stars, Sadalsuud (β Aqr, mag 2.87) and Sadalmelik (α Aqr, mag 2.95), are both yellow supergiants shining more than 500 light-years away. The Arabic name "Sadal" means "luck," and these stars were regarded as fortunate omens in antiquity.

Aquarius also hosts celebrated planetary nebulae, including the Saturn Nebula (NGC 7009) and the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) — one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, sometimes called the "Eye of God."

How to Find It

On autumn evenings (September through November), look low in the southern sky, east of Capricornus and north of Piscis Austrinus's Fomalhaut. Starting from Sadalsuud and Sadalmelik, trace the "stream" of stars flowing to the southwest to piece together the figure.

Aquarius transits around 9 PM in early October. From mid-latitudes it sits low in the south, so an unobstructed southern horizon helps.

Mythology and Culture

In Greek myth, Ganymede was a Trojan prince of extraordinary beauty. Zeus, disguised as an eagle (Aquila), carried him to Olympus to be the cupbearer of the gods, pouring nectar for the immortals. The stream flowing from his urn is said to reach all the way to Fomalhaut in Piscis Austrinus.

In Babylonian astronomy, the same stars represented Ea, the great water god and symbol of the Flood. Ancient Egyptians linked the constellation's rising to the Nile's annual inundation, believing the water-bearer tipped his urn into the river to begin the flood season.

Sadalsuud (β Aqr) — About 540 light-years away. A G0 yellow supergiant at magnitude 2.87, the brightest star in Aquarius. Its name is Arabic for "the luckiest of the lucky."

Sadalmelik (α Aqr) — About 520 light-years away. A G2 yellow supergiant at magnitude 2.95. Its name means "lucky stars of the king."

Albali (ε Aqr) — About 208 light-years away. An A1 white main-sequence star at magnitude 3.77. Its name is Arabic for "the swallower."

ζ Aqr — About 103 light-years away. A magnitude 3.65 F3 double star, resolvable into two components through a small telescope.

Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) — About 650 light-years away. The largest planetary nebula on the sky by apparent size — over half a degree across — often called the "Eye of God."
