CAPRICORNUS

Overview

Capricornus is one of the twelve zodiac constellations and among the faintest in the sky. Its distinctive inverse-triangle shape represents the sea-goat — a creature with the upper body of a goat and the lower body of a fish — associated with the god Pan. The winter solstice was once located in Capricornus, giving the Tropic of Capricorn its name; precession has since shifted it into Sagittarius.

The brightest star, Deneb Algedi (δ Cap) at magnitude 2.85, stands noticeably brighter than the rest of the constellation. It is an eclipsing binary located just ~39 light-years away.

In Greek myth, Pan leaped into the Nile River to escape the monster Typhon, and only his lower half submerged in water transformed into a fish — creating the curious sea-goat form.

How to Find It

On summer and autumn evenings (August through October), look low in the southern sky between Aquarius and Sagittarius. From mid-northern latitudes Capricornus hugs the horizon, making southern hemisphere skies far more favorable. Capricornus transits around 9 PM in mid-September.

Start from the close pair of Algedi (α) and Dabih (β) at the western end, then trace the inverse triangle eastward toward ζ and δ.

Mythology and Culture

Pan, son of Hermes, is the Greek god of the wild, music, and shepherds, typically depicted as half-man, half-goat. When the monster Typhon attacked Olympus, the gods fled in panic by transforming into animals. Pan jumped into the Nile, and the portion of his body that entered the water became a fish while the upper half remained a goat — forming the comical sea-goat. Zeus immortalized the creature among the stars.

Babylonian astronomy recorded this constellation as SUHUR.MASH ("goat-fish") nearly 4,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest recognized constellations. It was linked to Enki, the Mesopotamian god of water and wisdom.

Star Trivia

Deneb Algedi (δ Cap) — About 39 light-years away. An A7m III white giant at magnitude 2.85 and an eclipsing binary with a period of ~1.02 days. "Deneb Algedi" is Arabic for "the tail of the goat."

Dabih (β Cap) — About 328 light-years away. A complex system combining a K0 II orange giant with an A0 companion, separable to the naked eye. Its name means "the lucky stars of the slaughterer" in Arabic.

ζ Cap — About 398 light-years away. A G4 Ib yellow supergiant at magnitude 3.77, forming the bottom edge of the sea-goat's inverse triangle.

Algedi (α Cap) — An optical double star with components at ~100 and ~690 light-years. Magnitude 3.58. Its name is Arabic for "the goat's horn."

The signature combo is Slab Meteor + Nebula + Strong BH. Wide slab meteors weave through slow-down clouds, and a Strong BH frequently sits near the cloud's exit.

Read the slab's position and orientation before entering the cloud, and pre-plan your Slingshot path through it. Around the Strong BH, give yourself roughly 1.5× the detour clearance you'd use for a regular BH.
