Overview

Cancer is one of the twelve zodiac constellations, yet it is notoriously faint — all its stars are dimmer than magnitude 4 — making it nearly invisible from light-polluted skies. Its centerpiece is the Beehive Cluster (M44 / Praesepe), a naked-eye open cluster that ancient observers described as a misty patch.

Located between Gemini and Leo along the ecliptic, Cancer's brightest star Tarf (β Cnc) reaches only magnitude 3.52. Despite its inconspicuous appearance, the constellation is beloved by stargazers for M44 and its mythological connection to Heracles.

In Greek myth, Hera sent a crab to distract Heracles during his battle with the Hydra. It nipped at his foot but was quickly crushed underfoot; Hera honored its loyalty by placing it among the stars.

How to Find It

On winter and spring evenings (February through May), look midway between Gemini's Pollux/Castor and Leo's Regulus. The conspicuous absence of bright stars marks Cancer's location.

Under dark skies the Beehive Cluster (M44) is faintly visible to the naked eye as a hazy glow. Binoculars reveal dozens of closely packed stars. Cancer transits around 9 PM in early March.

Mythology and Culture

The crab appears in the second of Heracles' Twelve Labors — the slaying of the Lernaean Hydra. Hera dispatched it from the sea to bite Heracles' foot and disrupt his fight; it was crushed almost immediately. Hera immortalized the loyal creature by setting it among the stars.

In Babylonian astronomy the same area was depicted as a turtle. Ancient Egyptians sometimes portrayed it as a scarab beetle. The two flanking stars, Asellus Borealis and Asellus Australis, were seen by Greeks and Romans as donkeys feeding from a manger — the cluster M44 representing the manger (Praesepe).

Mesoamerican civilizations including the Aztec and Maya also assigned mythological significance to this region of the ecliptic, illustrating how zodiacal constellations were recognized across cultures worldwide.

Tarf (β Cnc) — About 290 light-years away. A K4 orange giant at magnitude 3.52, the brightest star in Cancer. Surface temperature ~4,000 K. Its name is Arabic for "the southern eye."

Asellus Australis (δ Cnc) — About 131 light-years away. A K0 orange giant at magnitude 3.94. The name means "southern donkey," positioned just south of the Beehive Cluster.

Acubens (α Cnc) — About 174 light-years away. An A5m white star at magnitude 4.26, actually a spectroscopic binary. Its name derives from Arabic for "claws."

Beehive Cluster (M44 / Praesepe) — 520–610 light-years distant. An open cluster of over 1,000 stars, faintly visible to the naked eye in dark skies and superb through binoculars. Estimated age: about 700 million years.
