HERCULES

Overview

Hercules is the 5th largest constellation but contains no first-magnitude star. Its most recognizable feature is the "Keystone" — a compact trapezoid formed by ε, π, η, and ζ — that marks the hero's torso high in the summer sky. Despite lacking dazzling stars, it is one of the most storied constellations in the sky.

The showpiece of Hercules is M13 (the Great Globular Cluster), located ~25,000 light-years away and containing roughly 300,000 stars packed into a sphere about 150 light-years across. It is the finest globular cluster visible from northern latitudes, faintly visible to the naked eye and spectacular through binoculars.

The brightest star, Kornephoros (β Her), is a G-giant at magnitude 2.78, ~139 light-years distant. ζ Her at ~35 light-years is one of the nearest Sun-like stars. Rasalgethi (α Her) is a red supergiant variable hundreds of times the Sun's diameter, with magnitude ranging from 2.7 to 4.0. Hercules covers 9 stages — among the longest in the game.

How to Find It

On a summer night, look high overhead for the Keystone — a small trapezoid of four stars midway between bright Vega (Lyra) to the east and Alphecca (Corona Borealis) to the west. That quadrilateral is the core of Hercules.

From the Keystone, trace arms northward and legs southward to fill in the full figure. M13 lies on the western side of the Keystone, roughly between η and ζ Her, and on a dark night appears as a faint fuzzy patch even to the naked eye.

Mythology and Culture

Heracles (Hercules in Latin) was the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene — the greatest hero of Greek mythology. Driven mad by the jealous goddess Hera, he killed his own family and was sentenced to perform the Twelve Labors as penance.

The Twelve Labors include: slaying the Nemean Lion, killing the Hydra, capturing the Ceryneian Hind, capturing the Erymanthian Boar, cleaning the Augean Stables, driving off the Stymphalian Birds, capturing the Cretan Bull, taming the Mares of Diomedes, obtaining the Girdle of Hippolyta, stealing the Cattle of Geryon, fetching the Golden Apples of the Hesperides (connected to Draco), and bringing back Cerberus from the Underworld.

In the sky Hercules is depicted kneeling with one foot on the head of Draco. The constellation was known in Babylonian astronomy as the "Kneeling Man" long before the Greeks associated it with Heracles.

Star Trivia

Kornephoros (β Her) — About 139 light-years away. A G7 giant at magnitude 2.78 — the brightest star in Hercules yet designated beta, an unusual case where the alpha star is dimmer. The name means "club-bearer" in Arabic.

Rasalgethi (α Her) — About 360 light-years away. An M5 red supergiant 300–500 times the Sun's diameter, it is a semi-regular variable fluctuating between magnitude 2.7 and 4.0. The name means "head of the kneeling one" in Arabic. It is also a binary, with a G-type companion orbiting at roughly 500 AU.

ζ Her — Only ~35 light-years away, one of the nearest bright stars to Earth. A G0 subgiant at magnitude 2.81, it is a spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of about 34 years.

μ Her — Just ~27 light-years away, the closest of Hercules' stage stars. A G5 dwarf at magnitude 3.42, it ranks among the solar neighborhood's Sun-like stars and is sometimes mentioned as a future interstellar travel destination.

τ Her — About 310 light-years away. A blue-white B5 subgiant at magnitude 3.89. Due to the precession of Earth's axis, τ Her is predicted to become the North Star around the year 18,400 AD.
