おひつじ座は黄道12星座のひとつで、歴史的に「春分点の星座」として天文学と占星術の両面で重要な位置を占めてきました。現在は歳差運動により春分点がうお座に移っていますが、紀元前2000年頃には春分点がおひつじ座にあり、それが黄道12星座の起点とされた理由です。
星座そのものはコンパクトで目立つ星は少なく、主にハマル・シェラタン・41 Ari の3星が小さな弧を描きます。面積は88星座中39番目と中程度ですが、都市部では4等星以下の星が見えにくいため、全体像を把握するには暗い空が必要です。
最も明るいハマルは等級2.01のK型巨星で、約66光年の距離にあります。やや橙色を帯びた色合いが特徴的で、この星座の中では圧倒的に目を引く存在です。
秋から冬の夜（10月〜1月）に観測しやすい星座です。まず秋の四辺形（ペガスス座の大四辺形）を目印にしましょう。四辺形の東側の2星から南へ視線を移すと、やや橙色を帯びた2等星ハマルが見つかります。
ハマルの南東にシェラタン（β星）、さらにその先にメサルティム（γ星）が並びます。またハマルの北西方向には41 Ariが位置し、全体として緩やかな弧の形を描いています。プレアデス（昴）やヒアデス（おうし座）の方向とも近く、その周辺を探すと見つけやすいでしょう。
南中は11月中旬の午後10時頃。春分点のある方向（現在はうお座との境界付近）を意識すると、黄道沿いの位置関係が把握しやすくなります。
ギリシャ神話では、おひつじ座は黄金の毛を持つ翼ある牡羊です。ボイオティアの王子フリクソスとヘレは継母の陰謀から逃れるため、この黄金の牡羊に乗って空を飛びました。途中でヘレは落命しましたが、フリクソスはコルキスへ辿り着き、牡羊を神ゼウスへの供物として捧げ、その黄金の毛皮をアレスの森の聖なる木に掛けました。
この「黄金の羊毛（ゴールデン・フリース）」こそが、後にイアソンとアルゴナウタイが求めた伝説の宝物です。英雄たちの冒険譚と結びついたこの星座は、古代ギリシャ・ローマ世界で特別な存在感を持っていました。
占星術では、おひつじ座は12星座の最初の星座とされ、「始まり」「行動力」「勇気」のシンボルとして位置づけられています。これは春分点がおひつじ座にあった時代の名残で、季節の始まりと星座の起点が一致していた頃の記憶です。
ハマル（α Ari） — 地球から約66光年。等級2.01で全天で比較的明るい星のひとつ。スペクトル型K2 IIIの橙色巨星で、表面温度は約4,900Kと太陽より低め。太陽の約14倍の半径を持つ巨星です。名前はアラビア語で「羊の頭」を意味します。
シェラタン（β Ari） — 地球から約60光年。等級2.64のA5型主系列星で、実際には二重星です。名前はアラビア語で「2つの印」を意味し、おひつじ座の春分点に近い位置にあることから、古代では天文暦の基準点として重視されました。
メサルティム（γ Ari） — 望遠鏡で容易に分離できる美しい二重星（等級4.0と4.6の2星）。1664年にロバート・フックが望遠鏡で発見した最初期の二重星のひとつです。両星ともA型の白色星で、分離がしやすいことからアマチュア天文家の観測対象として人気があります。
41 Ari（c Ari） — 地球から約160光年。等級3.63のB8型主系列星で、おひつじ座の中では比較的青白い色合いをしています。バイエル符号ではなくフラムスティード番号で呼ばれることが多い星で、ゲーム内ではステージの起点となっています。
おひつじ座はゲーム内で18番目に登場する3ステージ構成のコンパクトな星座。41 Ari から始まり、ハマル、シェラタンの順に進行します。
主役ギミックは 板隕石 + Pulsar。狭めの空間に板隕石とパルサーが同居し、パルスで弾かれた Solar Shard が板に衝突するパターンが多発します。
パルスの無音時間に板の位置を確認してから引力場を描くこと。短いステージなので、各画面で最初の 2 秒で全配置を読み切る集中力が求められるテクニカルなエリアです。
Aries is one of the twelve zodiac constellations and has historically been one of the most significant — it was once the location of the vernal equinox. Due to axial precession, the equinox has since shifted into Pisces, but around 2000 BC it sat squarely in Aries, making it the traditional starting point of the zodiac.
The constellation itself is compact and unspectacular. Its main asterism consists of just three stars — Hamal, Sheratan, and 41 Ari — forming a gentle arc. It ranks 39th in area among the 88 constellations, and its fainter stars require reasonably dark skies to appreciate fully.
The brightest star, Hamal, is a magnitude 2.01 K-type giant about 66 light-years away. Its subtle orange tint makes it the most distinctive point in this otherwise understated constellation.
Aries is best observed in autumn and winter (October through January). Start with the Great Square of Pegasus as a reference point. From the two eastern stars of the square, drop your gaze southward and you will find Hamal — a gently orange-tinted 2nd-magnitude star.
Sheratan (β Ari) lies to the southeast of Hamal, followed by Mesarthim (γ Ari) in the same direction. To the northwest, 41 Ari completes the soft arc. The constellation lies not far from the Pleiades and Hyades clusters in Taurus, making that region a useful landmark.
Aries transits around 10 PM in mid-November. Keeping the ecliptic in mind helps place it in context — the vernal equinox point currently falls near the Aries–Pisces border, a silent reminder of the constellation's ancient primacy.
In Greek mythology, Aries represents the ram with the golden fleece. The Boeotian princes Phrixus and Helle, fleeing their stepmother's treachery, rode this winged golden ram across the sky. Helle fell into the sea — naming the Hellespont — but Phrixus reached Colchis, sacrificed the ram to Zeus, and hung its golden fleece in the sacred grove of Ares.
That fleece became the legendary prize sought by Jason and the Argonauts, connecting Aries to one of antiquity's greatest adventure stories. In the ancient Greek and Roman world, the constellation carried exceptional prestige as the herald of spring and the first sign of the zodiac.
In astrology, Aries remains the first sign, symbolising beginnings, initiative, and courage — a legacy of the era when the vernal equinox coincided with the Sun's passage through its stars, marking the true start of the new year.
Hamal (α Ari) — About 66 light-years away, magnitude 2.01. A K2 III orange giant with a surface temperature of roughly 4,900 K and a radius about 14 times the Sun's. Its name comes from the Arabic for "head of the ram." Despite being relatively unassuming in appearance, it is a genuine giant star near the end of its main-sequence life.
Sheratan (β Ari) — About 60 light-years distant, magnitude 2.64. An A5 main-sequence star that is actually a spectroscopic binary. Its name means "two signs" in Arabic, reflecting its historical role as one of the markers of the vernal equinox. Ancient astronomers valued its position along the ecliptic for calendar reckoning.
Mesarthim (γ Ari) — A showpiece double star easily split by small telescopes into two white A-type components of magnitudes 4.0 and 4.6. It was among the very first double stars resolved telescopically, discovered by Robert Hooke in 1664. Its wide, even split makes it a popular target for amateur observers.
41 Ari (c Ari) — About 160 light-years away, magnitude 3.63. A B8 main-sequence star with a noticeably blue-white colour compared to the rest of the constellation's stars. More commonly identified by its Flamsteed number than a Bayer designation, it serves as the starting point of the Aries stages in-game.
Aries is the eighteenth constellation, a compact 3-stage zone progressing from 41 Ari through Hamal and on to Sheratan.
The signature combo is Slab Meteor + Pulsar. Slab meteors and Pulsars share tight spaces, and Shards ejected by pulses frequently collide with passing slabs.
Identify slab positions during the silent intervals between pulses before placing any gravity field. With short stages, reading the entire layout in the first two seconds is what separates clean clears from costly retries.
