おおいぬ座は、全天で最も明るい恒星シリウス（−1.46等）を擁する冬の星座です。シリウスはA型主系列星で、地球からわずか8.6光年という近さにあります。その圧倒的な明るさから「犬の星」（Dog Star）とも呼ばれています。
シリウスの南にはアダラ（ε星）やウェズン（δ星）などの明るい星が並び、犬の体を形作っています。冬のダイヤモンドを構成する星のひとつでもあります。
冬の夜、オリオンの三つ星を左下に延長すると、ひときわ明るく青白い星に行き当たります。それがシリウスです。低い位置で大気の影響を受けると虹色にきらめくことがあり、一際目を引きます。
ギリシャ神話では、狩人オリオンの猟犬とされています。古代エジプトでは、シリウスの出現がナイル川の氾濫の時期を告げる重要な星として崇められていました。「犬の日」（ドッグデイズ）という言葉も、夏にシリウスが太陽とともに昇ることに由来しています。
おおいぬ座は6番目に登場する星座で、4つのステージで構成されています。シリウスから始まり、ミルザム、アダラ、アルドラの順に進行します。
中盤の星座として、隕石と板状隕石の混在するステージが増えてきます。
Canis Major hosts Sirius, the brightest star in the entire night sky at magnitude −1.46. Sirius is an A-type main-sequence star only 8.6 light-years from Earth, earning it the nickname "the Dog Star."
South of Sirius, bright stars including Adhara and Wezen outline the body of the Great Dog. Sirius is also one of the stars forming the Winter Hexagon asterism.
On winter evenings, extend Orion's belt line down and to the left to reach a dazzlingly bright blue-white star — Sirius. When low on the horizon, atmospheric effects can make it twinkle in rainbow colors, making it unmistakable.
In Greek mythology, Canis Major represents one of Orion's hunting dogs. In ancient Egypt, the rising of Sirius signaled the annual flooding of the Nile. The expression "dog days of summer" originates from the period when Sirius rises alongside the Sun.
Canis Major is the sixth constellation, consisting of 4 stages. Starting from Sirius, stages progress through Mirzam, Adhara, and Aludra.
