ORION

Overview

Orion is one of the most prominent constellations in the winter sky. Positioned near the celestial equator, it is visible from nearly every inhabited region on Earth. Its three belt stars — Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka — form a distinctive straight line, flanked by the brilliant first-magnitude stars Rigel and Betelgeuse.

Rigel is a blue-white supergiant approximately 120,000 times more luminous than the Sun. Betelgeuse, glowing red at the upper left, is a red supergiant with a diameter roughly 700 times that of the Sun. This striking contrast between the two brightest stars is one of Orion's most captivating features.

How to Find It

On winter evenings, look south for three stars in a neat row — that is Orion's Belt. Below-right shines blue-white Rigel; above-left glows red Betelgeuse. Below the belt, the faint fuzzy patch of the Orion Nebula (M42) is visible to the naked eye.

Mythology and Culture

In Greek mythology, Orion was a legendary hunter of great skill. The most widely known account of his death involves a giant scorpion. Orion and Scorpius were placed on opposite sides of the sky so they would never appear together — a celestial arrangement rooted in this ancient tale.
